Monday - Staff/Counselor Hunt
Camp is going pretty well. My campers are all pretty good, but some of them are a little bit confrontational, but Parker is my co-counselor and is helping keep them in line. Spaz isn't here and Kasey has become a staff mid-summer. I'm doing rockets with Jim-Bob, Canoeing with Monty, and Improv with Kasey.
I'm in Iroquois with Monty, Jen, Kasey, Marin and Julianna and Don Munson. We were at tribe meeting today and there was a rock that said "K+A '05" and Monty said it was Katie and Amy. Sweet. I also carried a bucket of water down to the pond for tribe night for the fire. Bucket of water, carried to pond.
Becky and I hid in a tree, but when we got out I slipped but only got cut once.
Tues - Before Bed
Becca sent me through the staff/counselor tickle machine, but I couldn't think of any poetry to recite. My parent's entertainment mail was "list colleges you're applying to." Gold Rush was pretty interesting, and everyone got really psyched about Jedi Challenge. My blinky ring got lost, alas. Monty wanted to reschedule taking his mom out to her 50th birthday party and consequently night off so he could go to Jedi Challenge.
My kids & cabin 6 weeded the herb garden today. They cleared out so much biomass.
Camp has quite extreme highs and lows of emotion. I am either trying to keep my kids in line, or I'm singing at vespers and loving camp.
Thurs - Naptime
The hike went pretty well, although it has been quite hot. [this part ends here because my kids start being totally crazy]
Thurs - Skit Night
Oh sweet. My kids just nailed their skit that I barely helped them make. It was American Idol, which was the same skit I did last year, and even had one of the same kids doing the same thing. But they all worked together on something and pulled it off and it was good. Sweet.
Parker moved to cabin 2, so I'm on my own. A bunch of sicknesses are going around, rashes and fevers, yay.
Zach and company did their "Trish and Jen" skit again. It was crazy borderline inappropriate. Sleepout was pretty awesome, especially as I haven't had one since I was a camper. The kids quited down well enough and then us counselors got to chill on our own. It was cool.
Budarz and Jack just did the staff-as-table-with-water-on-back skit, but they used THREE FULL BOTTLES. They're still mopping the floor. When I did that skit two years ago, we cleared all the water with ONE towel. Jeez. At least we have a real counselor skit this planned this year. Parker has stiches in his lip this week, so it's all reason we think why he has them. "I heard Parker was playing tennis and he went to hit a serve and a UFO hit him in the lip." [also included, "I heard Parker was macking on Leighann and James from MySpace got jealous and punched him in the face."
I feel my dress ups have been underwhelming because I packed bad, but the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" is almost as sweet as the "I'm a little tea pot."
CTF became Lazy Days in the Pond due to heat. Oh well, it was fun and I got a ducky innertube.
Camp really brings out real highs and real lows, today had some big lows and some big highs. The trick is to keep things good for 36 more hours, and not let things degrade so anyone is not enjoying it.
I've gotten letters from Amy, Becca, Mike, Katie, Emily, and my family. Amy got called back this week for Nicki's spot, but she's at sailing camp. Mike sent me the Reminder's editorials, and I swear Amy Gordon wrote them a letter.
Will Smith wrote Kasey (who hurt her knee) a letter to make her sing "Miami" by Will Smith and yell "I love the white Will Smith and wish he was at camp." Nice!
Saturday - At home
Friday was pretty good. The day was very hot, so much drinking was done. I got like 8 girls at Sadie Hawkins, and then thunderstorms meant no swimming. I didn't go to a counselor swim once this week. Quite the opposite of last year. Spaz showed up, he got over his allergic reaction to amoxacillin. I found Amy and Katie's names in the store, and finally managed to get myself a drumstick; all week they sold out just before I got one.
The dance was pretty sweet. As usual, Spaz didn't think I was a very good dancer, but it was a lot of fun. I drank a ton of water because it was so hot. Me and Amanda were going to salsa dance, but instead I taught Don how to salsa dance. Spaz and I did some limbo action, and "We Didn't Start the Fire" was a sweet closer.
Vespers was pretty good, but generally I was ready for the week to end. Julianna won counselor of the week, which was fitting because she is really spirited. This makes four candles that I now have.
This certainly wasn't the easiest week I've ever had at camp, but it wasn't flat out bad. My kids were really bad, but that just teaches me more about the way I cope with things and what I need to work on when working with people who really don't want to cooperate. Camp is a really great place.
